Relic

 

Relic is a 3D third person action platfomer where you must use your grappling hook to traverse an ancient alien derelict and retrieve a valuable relic from its core.

My Role

I was the level designer/producer for Relic working with a group of 30 people composed of programmers, designers, artists, cinematics, sound designers, and writers.

 

On Relic I started as a level designer for the first two months of the project. After that time we decided as a team to let go of our producer. The team then asked me to take over so I stepped into that role while keeping my level design duties.

 

I spent the next month getting the team re-calibrated and tasked correctly. I tried to approach running the team in an very open way. Basically as long as it didn't get in the way of core tasks, anything was permissible to try. I felt that if someone was passionate about a feature it was best to let them get that out of their system early rather than force them to abandon it because it might not work out. We ended up with happier designers who felt that their ideas were respected and got to add some cool features that otherwise would have been passed over. This also made people better able to self gauge what they could accomplish in the long run. Under this philosophy we succeeded in completing the full game we set out to construct, a full multi level 3D platformer, on time.
